There are loads of great marketing blogs and websites out there with everyone giving their expert opinion on the future of marketing, but there is also a lot of bullsh*t out there too! So, we have put together a list of 12 marketing blogs you should follow right now, in no particular order!

But first, get yourself an RSS (Rich Site Summary) feed so you will have a one stop shop to scan through the latest articles and get in the habit of scrolling through your feed each day.

The most popular of these was Google Reader which unfortunately shutdown in July 2013, but since then, a ton of new ones have come on the market. We suggest downloading the Feedly app, the desktop version works pretty well too. It has an easy-to-use interface and you can view articles in lots of different formats, so if you prefer a newspaper-like interface or an image-centric view, it’s all possible. You can create categories, e.g. marketing, design, start-up, tech, design & many more. It also gives you the option of bookmarking your favourite articles which is a pretty useful feature.

1/ AD CONTRARIAN BY BOB HOFFMAN 

Bob Hoffman is a writer, speaker and is author of the popular Ad Contrarian blog and has written several books including 101 Contrarian Ideas About Advertising which became Amazon’s number one selling advertising book. He has also worked on some pretty large accounts such as McDonald’s, Toyota and more! He loves to have a pop at digital marketing, as you will see from this video below called The Golden Age of Bulshit. Bob certainly attracts a crowd with up 10,000 visitors to his blog on a good day.

 

2/ DAVE TROTT

Dave Trott is a very talented creative director, copywriter, author and is responsible for a Creative Mischief which is cracking read where he basically tells us about all he has learned in the advertising world over the last 40 years. This was followed by Predatory Thinking: A Masterclass in Out-Thinking the Competition and most recently his third book, 1+1=3, all are worth a read and you will pick them out on Amazon, any good bookstore or as an audiobook if you want someone to read it to you!  Dave’s posts are quite short and easy to read, but usually very informative, there are a few stand-out posts for us, Negative People v Positive People and Why Steve Jobs Didn’t do Timesheets

 

3/ SETH GODKIN

Probably the most noticeable name on the list and is definitely worth a mention. Seth Godkin is the author of loads of books, 18 in-fact! He writes about the post-industrial revolution, the way ideas spread, marketing, quitting, leadership and most of all, changing everything. You might be familiar with his books LinchpinTribesThe Dip and Purple Cow. His blog is one of the most popular in the world. 4/ ADAGE

ADAGE is a global media brand, delivering insights, analysis, news and data on marketing and media. The magazine actually began as a broadsheet newspaper in Chicago in 1930. It essentially covers all things marketing from advertising, media, digital, creative and has a very useful “required reading” section which you can find here.

 

5/ SEARCH ENGINE LAND 

Given the importance of digital, this is one we had to include. Search Engine Land features daily search engine industry news & trends in search marketing (SEM) – paid search advertising (PPC) & search engine optimization (SEO) plus expert analysis, advice, tips, tactics & How to Guides for search marketing. A must for any digital marketer.

 

6/ GOOGLE BLOGS

The digital advertising market is pretty much a duopoly with over 60% of digital revenue going to either Google & Facebook, with most of that revenue going the way of Google! With that in mind, it is wise to play close attention to what Google are doing with their various platforms/offerings such as Analytics, AdWords & YouTube, so here are four Google blogs worth following;

7/ CAMPAIGNLIVE 

Again, a great resource to view top campaigns, the movers and shakers in the big ad agencies along with useful case studies. The trends section on this site is worth a visit too.

 

8/ MARKETING WEEK 

Marketing Week is a leading UK magazine for marketing jobs, marketing news, opinion and information. Covering advertising, media, PR, online marketing & branding across all industries. Of course, much of what they cover is already done so on some of the other sites mentioned but they do have a section called strategy which is a really useful resource

 

9/ MARY MEEKER 

Mary Meeker is an American venture capitalist and former Wall Street securities analyst. Her primary work is on Internet and new technologies. She is a partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. She is highly regarded by Google and her work is often referenced by the internet giant. She basically has a crystal ball & is more accurate than not in predicting digital trends, here is the article Tech Crunch wrote about her.

 

10/ OCCAM’S RAZOR 

We have NO idea why it’s called Occam’s Razor but this blog by Avinash Kaushik, a Digital Marketing Evangelist for Google, is brilliant. His posts can get a little technical but if you are a digital nerd like us, you will love them. He focuses quite heavily on attribution (how you give credit to each digital interaction & attribute it accordingly as opposed to just giving credit to the last click).

 

11/ TECHCRUNCH 

TechCrunch is an American online publisher of technology industry news. It primarily covers the business side of tech, reporting breaking tech news, bold opinions on new products and the industry as a whole. The guys are not shy about giving their opinion. While the content they post is of value, they are also not shy of the keyboard. One drawback of this is that their articles tend to flood your newsfeed which can sometimes be annoying but put them on the list, you can always unfollow them at the touch of a button!

 

12/ MASHABLE

Mashable is a global, multi-platform media and entertainment company and is the go-to source for tech, digital culture and entertainment content. In recent years, these guys have also become a little fond of the keyboard and produce more content than is possible to read but nevertheless, they come up with some great reads & worth having in your feed.
